INTRODUCTION

Libraries are undergoing tremendous changes due to ICT revolution, information explosion and globalization. The emergence of knowledge society in the digital era has emphasized the need for knowledge resource centers to create, organize and provide quality information to the users from a variety of sources and media available across the globe. Libraries should learn from the past to plan and prepare for the future. Traditional library and information services need to be redefined keeping in view of the changing information requirements of the knowledge society. Libraries should use various ICT tools and techniques to provide customized and value added services to its present day users. The role and responsibility of librarians are constantly changing. Librarians need to acquire various skills and knowledge to perform new roles and meet the digital challenges.

 

CONFERENCE OBJECTIVE

The conference aims at providing a forum for learning and exchange of ideas among practicing librarians, information specialists, information providers, LIS teachers and students.

 

CALL FOR PAPERS

Articles / papers are invited for presentation in the following themes / sub themes in conformance with the main theme. Papers on original case studies, best practices, research, innovations and new ideas will be given preference for presentation and publication.

 

1. Collection Building: Policy, issues and management, Integrating print and digital resources, Weeding out, Loss of resources, Preservation of print and digital resources.

2. Information Needs and Analysis: Information needs of to-days users, User behaviour and assessment, Social information needs, use and satisfaction, Learning trends, Information infrastructure.

3. User Studies: Information seeking behaviour in the digital era, Utilization and evaluation of library resources and services, Bibliometrics, Webometrics, E-metrics, Reading habits and measures for improvement.

4. User Education: Promotion of library services, Information literacy programs, Innovative user education / orientation methods and techniques.

5. Creative and Innovative Library Services: Re-defining library services, Traditional vs Technology based services, User-interactive services, Customer support services, Value added services, Next generation library services.

6. Modern Library Management Practices: Library building design, Adoption of good old practices, Plan of action for the future, Automation trends, ICT tools and applications, Security systems and new tools, Outsourcing of Library services, Re-organization, re-engineering and transformation in libraries, Knowledge management and strategic planning, Change management in libraries, Liaison and public relation, Team building, Implementation of ISO standards, Library accreditations (NBA, NAAC), Marketing library products and services, Copyright and IPR issues.

7. Networking and Resource Sharing: Consortium and access mechanism, ILL, Networking of professionals, institutions, resources, experts and vendors for knowledge sharing, Users and librarians.

8. Digital Libraries: Current trends and challenges, Design, methodology, planning, digital initiatives, HW/SW, standards, formats and metadata, Institutional repository, OAI protocol and standards, Open source initiatives, Content creation and management, Data and information mining.

9. Web based Library Services: Web portal design, hosting and services, Emerging web tools for innovative library services, RSS feeds, Web 2.0, Web 3.0, Library 2.0, Wikipedia, Weblogs, Web OPAC, Web metrics, Deep web, Invisible sites, Subject Gateways, Search Engines, Semantic Web, Ontology, E-publishing, E-resources.

10. E-learning: Current trends and challenges, Tools and techniques, Software and modules, E-learning and higher education, Role of LIS in e-learning, Web based online courses and best practices.

11. Capacity Building Initiatives: Career development, Creativity thinking, Soft skill, Competency, Training, Changing manpower requirements, Quality manpower, Professionalism, Role of professional bodies.

12. Research in LIS: Current and global trends, Statistical tools in LIS research, Redesigning LIS courses, Refresher courses and Future research.

 

INVITED PAPERS

Each session will focus on a specific emerging topic with special keynote address from an expert. Subject experts in LIS and IT from various institutions across the country have been invited to present papers in each session, which will also be included in the conference proceedings.

 

SUBMISSION OF PAPERS

Authors are requested to submit the soft copy of full paper (with abstract not exceeding 200 words and at least three keywords) on CD or an e-mail attachment to the organizing secretary. Paper should not exceed 10 pages of A4 size with double line spacing and font size 12 in Times New Roman. Charts, graphs, photographs, if any, should be inserted at proper places in the paper.

 

Papers without registration fee will not be accepted.

 

A declaration by the author(s) should be given separately stating that the paper has not been presented / published elsewhere. Papers accepted for presentation will be intimated to the first author by e-mail. The decision of the editorial committee regarding the acceptance of the paper for presentation will be final.

KUMARAGURU COLLEGE OF TECHNOLOGY

Kumaraguru College of Technology is one of the leading self financing engineering colleges in India, started in 1984 under the auspices of Ramanandha Adigalar Foundation, a charitable educational trust of Sakthi Group. KCT, an autonomous institution approved by AICTE and affiliated to Anna University, Coimbatore offers 12 UG and 13 PG programs. All the 11 eligible programs have been accredited by the NBA. The institution is also accoladed with ISO 9001: 2000 certification and “Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan’s Best Engineering College” award in 2004 by ISTE. Mahatma Gandhi Central Library of KCT has a collection of about 75,000 documents including books, back volumes, projects and non-book materials. Fully automated MGCL has been subscribing about 1000 print / online journals. Recently it has implemented the IR using DSpace and augmented the digital library services using GSDL.

 

SOCIETY FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF LIBRARY AND INFORMATION SCIENCE (SALIS)

SALIS is a registered professional body, actively involved in the development of all spheres of LIS by organizing various programs including seminars, lectures and workshops on emerging areas. It has many chapters across the country to provide services in the respective regions. One of the objectives of SALIS is to train the LIS professionals to handle the latest IT tools and techniques more effectively and efficiently in order to provide quality based services.

 

ABOUT COIMBATORE

Coimbatore known as Manchester of South India has made significant growth in the fields of Education and Medicare. It is abounded with universities, colleges and now IT industries. Situated at the foot hills of Nilgiris, Coimbatore is known for its pleasant climate, peaceful atmosphere, cosmopolitan outlook and private enterprise.

Ooty, Coonoor, Mudhumalai wildlife sanctuary, Black Thunder water theme park, Kovai kondattam theme  park, Kovai kutrralam, Azhiyar dam, Top slip, Anaimalai wildlife sanctuary, Valparai, Thirumurthy hills, Amaravathi dam, Munnar, Malampuzha dam, Guruvayur, Palani and Kodaikanal.

Perur, Maruthamalai, Eachanari, Karamadai, Then Thirupathi and Dhyanalingam etc

Site seeing will be arranged on payment on 10.08.2008 (Sunday).

 

ACCOMMODATION

The delegates will be provided accommodation in the college hostel on twin sharing basis against an advance payment of Rs. 200/- on first cum first serve basis. Accommodation can also be provided for the family members on additional payment in advance. In case of non-availability of rooms in the hostel, accommodation will be arranged in hotels on extra payment. Many hotels are available near the Railway station and Gandhipuram bus stand and the tariff ranging from Rs.300 to Rs.3000 for non-A/C and A/C accommodation.

 

TRANSPORT

KCT is located near Saravanampatti in the Coimbatore-Mysore National Highway and is 10 kms away from Coimbatore Central Bus Stand and 12 kms from the Railway Station. Call taxi, auto and bus facilities are available from all parts of the city. For availing transport and accommodation facilities, the volunteers will guide the delegates from the Railway Station and Bus stand from 7th August 2008 morning onwards.
